twenty one pilots

another band i got into through the cultural osmosis of tumblr dot com. i never got into them as insanely as a lot of people did, and i've fallen off since partly because i simply cannot keep up with the mythos and storytelling stuff they do, just give me the relatable mental health bangers i don't care about your worldbuilding lol.

vessel (2013)

favourite songs: holding onto you, car radio, kitchen sink, forest
thoughts: a masterpiece. their best album and also one of my favourite albums of all time. not one single skip. it's up there with future hearts as one of the albums that got me through a nightmare period. many late night drives to a miserable place were accompanied by car radio playing in my headphones.

blurryface (2015)

favourite songs: the judge, message man, heavydirtysoul
thoughts: there are a few songs i skip on here but other than those it's really, really good. this one is iconic for a reason. the dark themes, the harsher sounds, it's a really beautiful, powerful chaos.

trench (2018)

favourite songs: neon gravestones, morph, leave the city
thoughts: this is a good album but it's also where i kind of fell off from this band for whatever reason. a lot of the songs just don't do anything for me, though the ones that do are incredible. shoutout to neon gravestones and leave the city for being the depressing bangers i expect from TOP.

keane

my mum's favourite band so through osmosis i kind of had to get into them too.

hopes and fears (2004)

favourite songs: somewhere only we know, can't stop now, bend and break
thoughts: the nerve to debut with a perfect album. what the hell. absolutely deserves its unbreakable grip on british radio.

under the iron sea (2006)

favourite songs: crystal ball, nothing in my way
thoughts: oh baby it's depression time!! i got into this album in particular when i was going through the worst time ever, oh the hours spent weeping to nothing in my way.

get scared

a band i got into in the height of my EDGY period! this is another one of these bands that was the soundtrack to a very specific period of my life, as well as pretty much the sole inspiration for an incredibly edgy OC of mine lol.

best kind of mess (2011)

favourite songs: sarcasm, whore, drown
thoughts: theatrical edginess at its best and so god damn fun. what more could you ask for.

everyone's out to get me (2013)

favourite songs: told ya so, god damn liar, for you
thoughts: told ya so is Art. musical chaos and attitude perfected. i still prefer their first album but this one is fun too.

demons (2015)

favourite songs: suffer, buried alive, demons
thoughts: pretty different from the previous albums, losing a lot of the fun and theatrics in favour of a heavier sound but it still slaps!

red vox

as a vinesauce fan, of course i am also a red vox fan. not as much as i used to because i don't really vibe with the direction they've been going in but those first two albums had a grip on my heart unlike anything else. i can't believe vinny vinesauce and jabroni mike wrote in the garden about me personally

what could go wrong (2016)

favourite songs: back to school, in a dream
thoughts: very rough around the edges but so nostalgic to me, revisiting it to write this has made me realise i seriously need to start listening to this album more frequently lol. it was really weird how much this album clicked with me because music like this has never really been my style, but my devotion to vinny at that time helped me get out of comfort zone for this one.

another light (2017)

favourite songs: in the garden, forgive and forget, memories lie, burn a picture
thoughts: WHAT AN ALBUM. it was magic from the very first notes, the same melody found at the tail end of the last song on WCGW. another light is just pure art to me, it's impossible to listen to just one track on its own because together they make this perfect flow, a gradual decline to the absolute depths of despair shown with in the garden and the melancholy redemption found in the final two songs. the soundtrack to so many mental breakdowns of mine, it's such a cathartic listen that lets you get it all out and find healing at the end. it makes me sad in retrospect that i haven't been able to get into anything they've done since this album, but it will always remain something truly special to me.

realign (2020)

favourite songs: ozymandias, realign
thoughts: oh how i wish i could love this album. the singles were looking really promising to me but the album itself just all blends into one for me, way too dreamy and bland for my tastes. there are still a couple of songs i like but the majority i haven't touched since the first listen. ozymandias set my expectations so high only to be nothing like any of the other songs lol

pet shop boys

it's the 80s babey

please (1986)

favourite songs: west end girls, opportunities (let's make lots of money), suburbia, later tonight
thoughts: you could say this about any pet shop boys album but the vibes are truly impeccable on this one

actually (1987)

favourite songs: it couldn't happen here, heart, what have i done to deserve this?
thoughts: more excellent vibes, now with 100% more ennio morricone

area 11

now here's a real throwback. i was a huge yogscast fan back in the day which naturally meant i was also a huge area 11 fan. not a band i listen to much/at all anymore but ATLITS and the underline EP still fuck. GO!! fighting action power my beloved.

all the lights in the sky (2013)

favourite songs: vectors, knightmare/frame, shi no barado
thoughts: so much nostalgia. the friend who got me into yogs let me use his spotify account to listen to this album and it slowly took over my life for a bit. literally all i listened to for a while. also rip to shi no barado which was my absolute favourite song but it was unfortunately my "thinking about my ex" song so as lovely as it is it's slightly ruined now.

britney spears

it's britney bitch etc

circus (2008)

favourite songs: if u seek amy, circus, lace and leather
thoughts: the sheer theatrics of this one.... the ha ha hee hee ha ha ho on if u seek amy... what more could you ask you

femme fatale (2011)

favourite songs: criminal, till the world ends, selfish, i wanna go
thoughts: not much to say other than this album well and truly fucks

charli xcx

i've been listening to her casually since true romance (nuclear seasons my beloved) but crash truly does something different to me

crash (2022)

favourite songs: used to know me, crash, lightning
thoughts: positively obsessed with the album art for this one

studio killers

as if it wasn't obvious enough i am a prolific tumblr user. the sheer chokehold jenny had us all in.

studio killers (2013)

favourite songs: jenny, friday night gurus, funky at heart, eros and apollo
thoughts: iconic! still the only studio killers album to this day. and i'm honestly fine with that, you can't improve upon perfection.

smallpools

the spotify algorithm's powers of recommending me random ass indie bands strikes again

LOVETAP! (2015)

favourite songs: mason jar, street fight, lovetap!, no story time
thoughts: addictively fun from start to finish

HUNNY

see above. also i'm breaking my no EPs rule for this one. not gonna break my no singles rule so just know that vowels (and the importance of being me) is one of the greatest songs ever written.

pain / ache / loving (2015)

favourite songs: la belle femme, cry for me
thoughts: if i told you what particular characters/series i associate these songs with you'd think i'm insane. so i won't.

windows I (2017)

favourite songs: shy, hard to believe
thoughts: good songs but weaker overall

ra ra riot

spotify does it again!

beta love (2013)

favourite songs: beta love, angel please, i shut off
thoughts: ah, 2015 star wars fandom nostalgia. this entire album is a threepio/artoo playlist

owl city

pretty much the first artist i was ever REALLY into, back when i was a kid that only listened to video game osts lol

maybe i'm dreaming (2008)

favourite songs: the saltwater room, dear vienna, this is the future
thoughts: this feels so ancient now!! still has so many cute songs on it, though.

ocean eyes (2009)

favourite songs: the saltwater room (it's the best song on BOTH albums it's on), fireflies, tidal wave
thoughts: so much fun wordplay on this one. i mean that's basically all owl city songs but the lyrics to dental care in particular are so fun

all things bright and beautiful (2011)

favourite songs: deer in the headlights, angels, honey and the bee, plant life
thoughts: i was so obsessed with deer in the headlights. tell me again was it love at first sight when i walked by and you caught my eye!!

the midsummer station (2012)

favourite songs: metropolis, speed of love, i'm coming after you
thoughts: it doesn't get any more early 2010s than this.

mika

he performed part of grace kelly at eurovision this year and i cried

the origin of love (2012)

favourite songs: origin of love, make you happy, emily, stardust
thoughts: the title track is so powerful. just a really joyous album.

walk the moon

a cover of shut up and dance came on the radio at work and some customers just started dancing in the middle of the store, based tbh.

talking is hard (2014)

favourite songs: avalanche, aquaman, come under the covers
thoughts: phenomenal songs to fall in love to. i don't wanna wait til the next life!!

panic! at the disco

another band i was never really into at their peak and the only album i have any strong feelings towards is the one everyone hates

too weird to live, too rare to die! (2013)

favourite songs: vegas lights, casual affair, far too young to die
thoughts: idk man i just think it's neat.

lord huron

shoutout to the person i follow on tumblr who said the world ender was a skull face vibe, life changing frankly.

strange trails (2015)

favourite songs: the world ender, meet me in the woods, frozen pines, louisa
thoughts: so as previously mentioned i became utterly obsessed with the world ender, and one month later i finally thought i should maybe listen to the rest of the album. holy shit. i barely have words. i'm not someone that gets into albums with deep lore or whatever but i don't find it necessary to get into that to just consider this an absolute masterpiece. there's a mysticism to it, the themes, the recurring melodies, the vibes, just EVERYTHING is incredible and i am enamoured. i'll listen to their other albums soon i just need to live inside this one for a bit first.
