Wii Pointer #1 Tilt Normal

NES games

i've played all the mario games to varying amounts and have probably beaten mario 1 but i honestly forgot. here's these two anyway.

metroid
nintendo R&D1, intelligent systems     1986
completed: 26/10/21     100%: no     physical: no (played on NSO)
this is a game made by absolute sickos. this is a game that makes you really appreciate how fortunate it was that the mario team just immediately understood the sort of norms that video games should have and would continue to have going forward. this is not so much a game about aliens but a game made by them.

the nondescript repeating room design was scientifically engineered to make you go insane. playing with a map and rewind only did so much to stave off the insanity. and yet i don't hate it. i think every metroid fan should play it. everyone should know about samus' pathetically small shooting range. everyone should know about getting to only have one beam type at a time and being physically able to not have the ice beam in tourian.

despite everything i think the game's atmosphere is amazing, and when the rooms are distinct they are some of the most iconic video game areas of the time. i also think nothing has ever come close to the original version of kraid's lair. genuinely the greatest piece of music to ever come out of that console.

super mario bros.: the lost levels
nintendo R&D4     1986
completed: 4/9/23     100%: no     physical: no (NSO)
don't ask me why i've completed this and not any of the actually good ones. i don't remember why i even played this in the first place.

anyway this game was made by even worse sickos than metroid, it's only bearable with rewind so i don't consider either of these games to be beaten particularly honourably. this game actively trolls you to the point of having warp pipes that only send you backwards.

you could argue it's a clever deconstruction of the ideas and expectations set up by mario 1, the first MGS2 of it's time, i suppose. or you could just accept this game was made as human torment. either way i think it's pretty interesting, if still miserable. and no i didn't beat the bonus worlds.
